Coyote-Proof Fencing in Los Angeles: How to Protect Your Pets and Yard

    ColtonSeptember 5, 2026

If you live anywhere near the hills in Los Angeles - Woodland Hills, Encino, Sherman Oaks, Calabasas - you have coyotes for neighbors. They are bold, they are smart, and they can jump or climb a surprising number of fences. The good news: the right fence setup stops them cold. Here is what actually works.

Why Standard Fences Fail Against Coyotes

A coyote can clear a 4 ft fence from a standstill and scramble over most 6 ft fences if there is anything to grip. Wood fences with horizontal rails on the outside are basically ladders. Wrought iron with wide spacing lets smaller coyotes slip straight through. Height alone is not enough - you have to remove their ability to climb.

    • 4 ft fences: Easily jumped, not a deterrent at all
    • 6 ft wood with outside rails: Climbable in seconds
    • Iron with wide picket spacing: Smaller coyotes slip through
    • Gaps at the ground: Coyotes dig and squeeze under loose fencing

What Makes a Fence Truly Coyote-Proof

The most effective coyote fencing combines three things: height, a smooth or angled top, and a secure bottom edge.

    • 8 ft minimum height: This is the baseline. Taller is better near open hillsides
    • Coyote rollers or angled extensions: A roller bar along the top spins when a coyote tries to grab it - they cannot get a grip and drop back down. Outward-angled extensions work the same way
    • No footholds: Smooth fence faces (vinyl, chain link with the fabric tight, wood with rails inside) remove climbing leverage
    • Sealed bottom: Fence bottom tight to grade, or a buried apron of mesh, stops digging

    The Best Coyote-Proof Fence Materials

    Chain Link

Chain link is the workhorse of coyote control in LA. It is affordable, you can see through it (so you can spot a coyote before your dog does), and with a roller bar or angled top extension it is extremely effective. For small dogs, consider a tighter mesh or a welded wire panel.

    Vinyl Privacy

A 6 ft vinyl privacy fence has a completely smooth face - nothing to climb. Add a roller on top near hillside areas and you have one of the most secure options available, plus full privacy.

    Wrought Iron (Done Right)

Iron can work if picket spacing is tight (4 inches or less) and the top is tall enough. It is the premium look, but it usually needs a roller upgrade to be truly coyote-proof.

Do Not Forget the Weak Points

Coyotes test fences. They find the one gap, the one loose board, the one gate that does not close flush.

    • Gates: Self-closing hinges and latches, no gaps at the bottom
    • Corners: Common climbing spots - rollers matter most here
    • Dog doors: Lock them at night; a fence is only half the system
    • Supervision: No fence replaces watching small pets at dawn and dusk, when coyotes are most active

    Local Reality Check

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife recommends fencing as one of the most effective ways to protect pets, alongside hazing and removing food attractants. In hillside communities across the San Fernando Valley, we install coyote rollers and 8 ft+ fencing regularly - it is one of the most requested upgrades we do.
